In the late 60s, Dhofar rose up against the British-backed Sultanate of Oman, in a democratic, feminist guerrilla movement. Though Western European States and North American suggest otherwise, the fight against patriarchy, political oppression, and reactionary traditionalism is no foreign import in this region. Whether manifested in military intervention, familial abuse, tribal prejudice, or ethnic discrimination, oppression was unitarily fought by the members of the People’s Liberation Army in the conviction that no single front should be left uncovered or prioritized. During the ten years of armed struggle in Dhofar, between 1965 and 1976, slavery was abolished, new supra-tribal identities were introduced, and sheiks suppressed for the first time. Members of lower tribes and slave backgrounds accessed positions of leadership, modern technology, contemporary medicine, reading and writing were made accessible to the population. The People’s Liberation Army — barefoot, without rank or salary — freed a third of the territory, while undertaking a vast program of social reforms and infrastructure projects — schools, farms, hospitals, and roads were built, while illiterate teenage shepherdesses became more forceful feminists than Simone de Beauvoir, and 8-year-old school children learned to practice democracy with more maturity than so many adults.

Director Heiny Srour and her team crossed 500 miles of desert and mountains by foot, under bombardment by the British Royal Air Force, to reach the conflict zone and capture this rare record of a now mostly-forgotten war.
